Strife in the lake

Sat 31 Aug 2024 8:51 AM - Transcribed by Tanis Wylder

In the tranquil depths of the lake, where sunlight danced through the water and every ripple carried a secret, two young Asrai, Liora and Kaelen, were inseparable. Liora, with her sea-green tail and bright, curious eyes, was always eager to explore the world around her. Kaelen, her best friend, had scales that shimmered like silver, and he possessed a quiet, thoughtful nature that balanced Liora’s impulsiveness.

The two had grown up together, learning the ways of the Asrai from the elders, playing among the coral reefs, and discovering the wonders of their aquatic home. They shared everything—dreams of the future, fears of the unknown, and a deep bond that had seen them through many adventures. But as they grew older, they began to realize that learning the true ways of the Asrai was not just about exploration and discovery; it was also about understanding the balance of life, facing challenges, and learning from their mistakes.

One day, while they were swimming near the edge of the lake, a place they had been warned not to venture alone, Liora spotted a flash of light deep in a shadowy crevice. Her curiosity piqued, she turned to Kaelen with a mischievous grin. "Did you see that? There’s something down there!"

Kaelen hesitated, glancing around nervously. "We’re not supposed to go near the edges, Liora. The elders say it’s dangerous."

"But that’s why we should explore it!" Liora insisted, her eyes gleaming with excitement. "Think of what we might find! Maybe it’s something ancient, like the Starstone."

Despite his better judgment, Kaelen’s sense of adventure got the better of him. He nodded reluctantly, and together they swam down into the crevice.

The light grew brighter as they descended, illuminating strange, twisting roots and hidden caverns. The deeper they went, the more oppressive the water felt, as if the very lake itself was trying to push them back. But Liora pressed on, her determination outweighing her fear. Kaelen followed closely, his unease growing with every stroke.

Finally, they reached the source of the light—a cluster of glowing crystals embedded in the rock. The crystals pulsed with a warm, inviting light that seemed to call to them.

"It’s beautiful," Liora whispered, reaching out to touch the nearest crystal.

But the moment her fingers brushed the surface, the crystals flared with a blinding light. The water around them churned violently, and the ground beneath them began to tremble. Liora and Kaelen were thrown apart, and in the chaos, they lost sight of each other.

"Liora!" Kaelen shouted, panic rising in his chest as he searched for his friend. The once serene crevice had become a swirling vortex of debris and confusion, and he could barely see a few feet in front of him.

"Liora, where are you?"

Liora, dazed and disoriented, tried to swim towards Kaelen’s voice, but the current was too strong. She was pulled deeper into the crevice, her heart pounding with fear. She had never been this far from the safety of their home, and now, she was completely alone.

For what felt like hours, the two friends struggled against the currents, desperately trying to find each other. But the more they fought, the more exhausted they became. Finally, in a moment of pure desperation, Liora remembered the teachings of the elders—how the Asrai were one with the water, and how they could draw strength from the lake if they allowed themselves to be still and listen.

She stopped fighting and closed her eyes, focusing on the rhythm of the water around her. Slowly, the panic ebbed away, replaced by a deep sense of calm. She could feel the currents guiding her, and in that moment, she knew what she had to do.

"Kaelen," she whispered, her voice carried on the water. "Stop fighting. Let the lake guide you."

Kaelen, barely conscious from the struggle, heard her voice in his mind. He stopped thrashing and allowed himself to float, trusting in the water to bring him back to safety.

The currents, now gentle and steady, began to carry them both towards each other. After what seemed like an eternity, Liora and Kaelen finally emerged from the chaos, their eyes locking in relief. They swam to each other and embraced tightly, their hearts pounding in unison.

"I’m so sorry," Liora whispered, tears mixing with the water around them. "I shouldn’t have been so reckless."

Kaelen shook his head, holding her close. "We both made mistakes. But we learned something important today. The lake isn’t just our home; it’s our teacher. We need to respect its power and listen to what it’s trying to tell us."

Exhausted but grateful, the two friends swam back to their home, the journey long but filled with a newfound understanding. When they finally reached the safety of the coral reefs, they were greeted by the concerned faces of the elders, who had sensed the disturbance in the water.

Iridessa, her wise eyes soft with understanding, approached them. "You’ve both learned a valuable lesson today," she said gently. "The ways of the Asrai are not just about exploration and discovery. They are about balance, respect, and knowing when to trust in the wisdom of the water."

Dionea nodded, her voice kind but firm. "The lake is a living entity, full of magic and power. It can be a friend, but it can also be a teacher in the harshest of ways. You must always remember that, no matter where your curiosity leads you."

Liora and Kaelen listened, their heads bowed in respect and humility. They had faced the strife of their own making, but they had come out stronger, their bond of friendship even deeper than before.

In the days that followed, Liora and Kaelen continued to explore the lake, but now with a greater respect for its mysteries. They understood that the lake had much to teach them, not just about its secrets, but about themselves and each other.

Their friendship, forged in the currents of the lake and tempered by the challenges they had faced, became an example for the other young Asrai. They were no longer just two adventurous Asrai; they were true Asrai, connected not just by their shared love for the lake, but by the deep understanding that came from facing and overcoming strife together.

And so, the lake continued to be their home, their teacher, and the guardian of their friendship, as they learned the ways of the Asrai, one current at a time.
